History

Located about 37 miles from Chicago and only a short drive to Lake Michigan, Libertyville is a small town with roots that run deep. Locals say its history began with the arrival of George Vardin, an Englishman who brought his family to the area in the early 1830s. The settlement that grew up following his arrival became known as Vardin’s Grove. By 1836, however, residents of the growing town voted to rename the area Independence Grove. That vote was taken during the town’s July 4 celebration.

The town’s name changed again in 1839 when it became the county seat of Lake County. The new name – Burlington – didn’t stick and neither did county seat status. In 1841, government power shifted to what would eventually become Waukegan and Libertyville officially became Libertyville.

Serving now as an important residential, service and market community for Lake County, Libertyville has retained its small-town feel and values its past.
