Lake Forest, IL A/C, Heating, and HVAC Services

History

The Lake Forest area was first settled during the middle of the 19th century. By the end of the 1860s, it had been incorporated as a city and was in the process of welcoming its first “in-town” residents. From the beginning, Lake Forest was conceived as an out-of-the-way destination for vacationing Chicagoans as well as migrants who couldn’t be bothered with the hustle and bustle of the city. Its exclusive atmosphere led to the construction of numerous lakefront “cottages” that had more in common with Gilded Age mansions. These days, Lake Forest is a popular bedroom community for Chicago as well as an important employment center in its own right.

Geography

Lake Forest is located on the shore of Lake Michigan in Lake County, Illinois. It’s a little more than 30 miles from the center of Chicago and about 60 miles to the south of Milwaukee. To the east, the city is bounded by the vast expanse of Lake Michigan. To the east and north, various suburban communities stretch towards the Wisconsin border. In addition to Interstate 94 and U.S. Highway 41, the area’s major thoroughfares include Illinois Highways 43 and 60. Like other communities along the North Shore, Lake Forest is heavily wooded.

Population and Demographics

Lake Forest has a population of just under 20,000. Like the other towns that hug the Lake Michigan shore between Chicago and Waukegan, the municipality hasn’t experienced much population growth since the 1980s. This is largely due to a lack of undeveloped land and strict preservation ordinances that require a certain ratio of open space to housing units in most parts of town. Those who are fortunate enough to live in Lake Forest hold jobs at major employers like North Shore Medical Group, Walgreens, Allstate and others.

Things to Do in Lake Forest, Illinois

The Lake Forest area is a paradise for high-culture buffs as well as lovers of the outdoors. Families with kids can’t miss Six Flags Great America, one of the country’s biggest amusement parks. For shoppers, Market Square serves as an early example of an outdoor shopping mall and continues to attract area residents. For architecture buffs, several distinctive properties by Frank Lloyd Wright and Howard Van Doren Shaw remain open to the public. Along the Lake Michigan shoreline, Fort Sheridan Forest Preserve draws active locals with miles of hiking trails and beautiful views of the open water.

Climate and Weather

Lake Forest experiences a four-season climate that’s marked by wide and often abrupt variations in temperature and moisture levels. During the winter, cold temperatures and regular snowfalls ensure that snow cover remains on the ground for several consecutive months. By April, thawing temperatures produce a flurry of growth as well as impressive flower displays. During the summer, hot, humid weather occasionally produces severe thunderstorms that can cause minor wind damage. Fall brings mild, breezy weather and a brilliant foliage display.
